navigating online private lessons
Private music lessons have traditionally been conducted face-to-face. However, the use of e-learning has increased due to 2020’s global pandemic, when many schools have shut down and people can no longer meet in person. Online music curriculum is in high demand, and as a result, educators now worry about how students will be able to learn and experience music like they did when meeting in person (Dammers 2009). Distance learning might be different, but it’s not impossible. Research shows the challenges of distance learning, especially the difficulty of collaboration (Dammers 2009; Bennet 2010). However, students who learned through virtual lessons have shown that they are improving their musical skills. One of the advantages of online learning is the established equal plain learning opportunity which encourages collaboration (Biasutti 2015). What does research say about the advantages and disadvantages of online private lessons? As the demand of online lessons increases, how might educators alter their private studio lessons in order to provide lessons that are comparable to in-person lessons?
